EVERYTHING IS LOVE is the debut collaborative album by THE CARTERS, which consists of power couple Beyoncé and JAY-Z.
Like much of the couple’s discography, the album was periodically exclusively available on the streaming service TIDAL, which is primarily owned by JAY-Z and Beyoncé (among other notable artists). It was later added to all streaming services on June 18, 2018.
The album completes the trilogy of Beyoncé and JAY-Z’s relationship as told through their albums. LEMONADE revealed JAY-Z’s infidelity, 4:44 was JAY-Z’s apology, and EVERYTHING IS LOVE is their reconciliation.
Rumors began in 2016 that JAY was working on a project with Beyoncé as a “response” to the cheating allegations that Bey discussed on LEMONADE. Instead, JAY released 2017’s 4:44 where he admitted to and apologized for his infidelity. In an interview with The New York Times following 4:44’s release, JAY confirmed he was working on an album with Beyoncé:
We were using our art almost like a therapy session. And we started making music together. And then the music she was making at that time was further along. So her album came out as opposed to the joint album that we were working on. Um, we still have a lot of that music. And this is what it became. There was never a point where it was like, ‘I’m making this album.’ I was right there the entire time.
EVERYTHING IS LOVE was released with no prior promotion, similar to Bey’s eponymous BEYONCÉ in 2013 and LEMONADE in 2016.
The album’s release coincided with the London show of Bey and JAY-Z’s second co-headlining stadium tour, the On the Run II Tour. During the show, there was a viewing of the music video for “APESHIT.” Following the show, a message on the big screen in large, white text read: “ALBUM OUT NOW.”
Along with the album’s release, Beyoncé posted the album cover and a short clip from the music video for “APESHIT” on her Instagram.
EVERYTHING IS LOVE debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200 in the week of June 21, 2018, selling more than 123,000 copies.
