Jodeci’s debut album, Forever My Lady, was released through Uptown/MCA Records on May 28, 1991. The album is a mix of slow jams and uptempo New Jack Swing dance tracks, a combo that would later be coined as Hip-Hop Soul. DeVante Swing, the creative force behind the group, wrote and produced all of the songs, while Grammy-nominated singer/producer Al B. Sure! co-produced the first half of the album and co-wrote the singles “Come and Talk to Me” and “Forever My Lady,” which he wrote as a dedication to his then-girlfriend Kim Porter and their son Quincy Brown. The soulful vocals were handled by brothers K-Ci & JoJo, who evoked their days of singing gospel in the church.
After appearing on the hit 1990 single “Treat ‘Em Like They Want To Be Treated” by Uptown artist Father MC, Jodeci released their debut single “Gotta Love” in February 1991. The title track was released as the second single in August 1991 and began the group’s ascension as it reached the top of the R&B Singles chart and peaked at #25 on the Billboard Hot 100. “Stay” and “Come and Talk To Me” also topped the R&B Singles chart, while the latter was propelled to the #11 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 thanks to the hip-hop remix produced by Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs. “I’m Still Waiting was released as the album’s final single and reached the Top 10 on the R&B singles chart.
The album achieved triple platinum status after debuting at #1 on Billboard’s R&B Albums chart and peaking at #18 on the Billboard 200. Forever My Lady won a Billboard Music Award for Top R&B Album and a Soul Train Music Award for Best R&B/Soul Album by a Group, Band or Duo.
