Following his two appearances in 1990 on EPMD’s third album Business As Usual, Redman released his debut Whut? Thee Album in 1992. The album was entirely produced by Redman himself and Erick Sermon, as the two provided heavy funk tracks from beginning to end. Redman provides a mix of hardcore and humorous lyrics throughout the album, including on the singles “Time 4 Sum Aksion,” “Blow Your Mind,” and “Tonight’s the Night,” as well as popular album cuts “A Day of Sooperman Lover” and “How to Roll a Blunt,” which was co-produced by Pete Rock.
The album debuted at #49 on the Billboard 200 and #5 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart on its way to gold status. The album was listed on a few all-time lists, including a spot at number 33 on Complex’s list of The 50 Greatest Debut Albums in Hip-Hop History and a feature on The Source’s Top 100 Rap Albums of All Time list.
