This is Johnny Cash’s cover-album on American recordings. It started in 1994 and continued with 1996’s “Unchained”.
The point with the recordings wasn’t to make a whole new transformation. The point was for Cash’s baritone to be elemental, to bestow the darker voices on moody songs was a statement enough. Cash’s solemn and ponderous voice is the same on all the songs in the album, whether he is covering Neil Diamond, David Allan Coe, Will Oldham, Bono or even himself.
