Following the success of their debut album, Forever My Lady, Jodeci returns with their sophomore effort Diary of a Mad Band, which displayed even more of a hip-hop sound and bad boy image amongst the love songs. DeVante Swing wrote and produced a majority of the album, while his brother Mr. Dalvin also produced a few tracks. The album features a guest appearance from Redman, and the album also marks the debuts of future superstars Timbaland and Missy Elliott, who were both a part of DeVante’s Swing Mob crew.
The album was certified double platinum after peaking at #3 on the Billboard 200 and topping the R&B Albums chart thanks to the singles “Cry For You” (#1 R&B, #15 Pop), “Feenin'” (#2 R&B, #25 Pop), and “What About Us” (#14 R&B). The album’s opening track, “My Heart Belongs To U,” was also a popular album cut even though it wasn’t officially released as a single.
Versions of the album featured their single “Let’s Go Through the Motions” from the Who’s the Man? soundtrack, as well as the studio version of their cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Lately,” which they originally performed live on Uptown’s MTV Unplugged in 1993. Their single peaked at #4 on the Billboard 200 and topped the Hot R&B Singles and Rhythmic Top 40 charts. The CD version of the album also contained the track “Success,” which detailed the journey of the group from North Carolina to New York City in order to acheive their dream.
