Joyride is the sophomore album by singer-songwriter Tinashe.
The album was delayed from 2014-2018 and over 200 tracks were recorded as the direction of the LP changed several times.
Sessions for the album began almost immediately after the release of her debut album Aquarius in 2014 and the end of its promo cycle in 2015.
As with her debut album the singer seemed to express disdain with the delay of the label in releasing her material, and as with her mixtape Black Water in 2013, she released another mxitape Amethyst in 2015 to thank her fans for their patience.
After a year of waiting, the singer then ‘leaked’ her choice for the first single, “Party Favors”, prompting RCA to release the track and its music video. It wasn’t until mid 2016 when RCA released the official debut single from the upcoming album, “Player”. The song stalled on the charts however, and the label quickly released “Superlove” as the next single. Once again this single failed to do considerably well on the charts and all promo halted.
Once again frustrated with her label’s lack of support, Tinashe released the promo singles “Company” and “Ride Of Your Life”, followed by a full parent project NIGHTRIDE which she called ‘the first part’ of the eventual album Joyride.
Again prompted by the lack of chart success of these latest singles, RCA took control of the project and insisted Tinashe release a far more pop/commercial as a single, the track “Flame”.
This also failed to chart highly and the singer decided she was going to release and record the project her own way once again. She re-recorded half the album, including sessions with StarGate at her home studio in 2018, and immediately began promo for the final tracklist, releasing the lead singles proper “No Drama”, “Faded Love” and “Me So Bad” in succession and leading up to the album’s final release date in April, 2018. All three promo singles were also included on the Japanese pressings.
