Yandhi was the original title of Kanye West’s ninth studio album. It was meant to be the follow-up to ye, his 2018 solo effort, and KIDS SEE GHOSTS, his 2018 collaborative project with Kid Cudi. Yandhi is a portmanteau of Kanye’s nickname (Ye) and Mahatma Gandhi’s surname.
Kanye first teased Yandhi on September 17, 2018, with posts on Instagram and Twitter of a cover art similar to the cover for Yeezus, Kanye’s sixth studio album. Then, on September 22, 2018, Yandhi promotional billboards began to appear in various locations around the world in the style of an iMessage.
On September 27, 2018, Kanye visited The FADER to preview Yandhi. The magazine revealed that XXXTENTACION, Ty Dolla $ign, and 6ix9ine all make appearances on the album and that a feature from Rihanna was in the works. It was also reported that the version played by Kanye was still unfinished less than three days before the album’s initial release date. Kanye also previewed a song titled “Slave Name” during his visit. The full article on Kanye’s visit can be read here.
Also on the 27th, Kanye posted a teaser for the album on Instagram and Twitter, containing a longer version of a snippet he had posted on his Instagram story weeks prior.
Yandhi was supposed to be released on September 29, 2018, to coincide with his appearance on the season premiere of Saturday Night Live. However, following the show, the album was nowhere to be found.
On October 1, 2018, Kim Kardashian West tweeted that her husband’s album would now be released on November 23, claiming “it is worth the wait.” Kanye followed Kim’s tweet with an interview with TMZ in which he stated that he was going to Africa to complete the album.
On November 12, 2018, Kanye took to Twitter to once again postpone the album, with its new release date undetermined.
On the first Sunday of 2019, Kanye began the “Sunday Service” series. This seemingly shifted the conceptual focus of Kanye’s ninth studio album from Yandhi to JESUS IS KING. Because of this, it appears that Yandhi is indefinitely scrapped. Kanye seemingly confirmed this on “Selah,” the second track on JIK, on which he raps:
Everybody wanted Yandhi
Then Jesus Christ did the laundry
A tentative tracklist for the September 2018 version of Yandhi leaked on July 11, 2019. Over the course of the following three months, early versions of some of the songs on that tracklist leaked online.
