On August 31, 2018, Eminem unexpectedly released his tenth studio album, Kamikaze, the follow-up to his December 2017 album Revival. The album is executive-produced by Dr. Dre and Em himself, credited as his alter-ego “Slim Shady.”
On this album, Eminem takes shots at those who have perceived his recent works negatively, specifically Revival, which received polarizing reviews from critics and a mostly negative reaction from fans. Em also offers commentary on a multitude of rappers, the state of modern hip-hop, and his relationship with former friends and collaborators. The album’s title, Kamikaze, alludes to Eminem risking his career, reputation, and “life” with this album in the same fashion as a kamikaze pilot.
The album boasts features from frequent collaborator Royce da 5'9", Joyner Lucas, and Jessie Reyez. Justin Vernon provides uncredited vocals on “Fall.” The album also features production from a variety of producers, including Mike WiLL Made-It, Boi-1da, Tay Keith, CuBeatz, and Ronny J.
The album’s artwork, which was created by Detroit artist Mike Saputo, is a reference to the cover art for the Beastie Boys‘ 1986 album Licensed to Ill.
A mistake was made when the album was put on streaming services where “Kamikaze” and “Fall” were inversely titled. The mistake appears to have stemmed from “Fall” being listed as #9 and “Kamikaze” being listed as #10 on the back cover art when, in actuality, they were reversed. On the day of the album’s release, the error was rectified on streaming services, but the back cover art was not updated.
Eminem released a four-part interview with Sway (in the Morning) titled “The Kamikaze Interview” in which he detailed his mind frame during Kamikaze’s creation and more. The first part was released on September 11, 2018, the second part on September 12, the third part on September 13, and the fourth and final part on September 14.
