The Big Day is Chance the Rapper’s debut studio album and his fourth solo project overall. It is the direct follow-up to his May 2016 mixtape, Coloring Book.
In an interview with the Chicago Tribune published on July 16, 2018, Chance said that his album would be released on July 20, but, the following day, he made a tweet contradicting his earlier statements.
Although Chance disappointed fans anticipating his album, they did not know they still would receive new music later that week. On July 19, Chance dropped four new songs on all platforms, “I Might Need Security,” “Work Out,” “Wala Cam” and “65th & Ingleside.” On November 30, 2018, Chance surprise-released two more singles: “My Own Thing” and “The Man Who Has Everything.” However, none of these six singles appeared on the album.
On February 11, 2019, Chance announced that the album would be dropping in July 2019.
On May 17, 2019, Chance released a promotional single titled “GRoCERIES,” but the song did not appear on the album.
On June 28, Chance added his previous mixtapes, 2012’s 10 Day and 2013’s Acid Rap, to streaming services. He also made The Big Day available for pre-order on his website, marking the first time that Chance’s music was officially sold.
On July 16, 2019, Chance unveiled the album’s title, artwork, and release date during his interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
