One Love was released on Bad Boy Records on November 9, 2004. Their previous album—1996’s Home Again—saw all six members get together for an entire project but a disastrous tour to support the album led to Bobby Brown once again leaving the group. The group was able to get out of their long-term contract with MCA Records but found themselves in the middle of more label drama as they weren’t seeing eye-to-eye with Sean “P. Diddy” Combs on the direction of the album.
The group disagreed with “Hot 2Nite” being the lead single as they felt their audience wouldn’t be receptive to it. The single peaked at #35 on Billboard’s R&B Singles chart and #87 on the Billboard 100. Despite a lack of promotion, the album reached gold status after peaking at #12 on the Billboard 200 and #4 on the Billboard R&B Charts. Following this album, New Edition requested their release from Bad Boy, which was granted the following year.
The album features production from Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Stevie J, Ryan Leslie, Dre & Vidal, Mario Winans, and P. Diddy.
