The Sun Rises In The East is the debut album of New York rapper Jeru the Damaja released via FFRR Records and Polygram Records in 1994. It is probably best known for the DJ Premier produced single “Come Clean”.
Jeru was only 22 when he recorded the album. It was recorded in its entirety at D&D Studios, where Premier would make some of his most well-known works. According to Jeru, the two created it in only two months.
The Sun Rises In The East contributed to the revival of interest in East Coast rap music in the early to mid-1990s — alongside Nas' Illmatic and Biggie’s Ready to Die — following West Coast prominence with Dr. Dre’s The Chronic and Snoop Dogg’s Doggystyle. With profound and intricate lyricism, it helped establish the unique gritty sound of NY hip hop.
Critically, the album is acclaimed. It received a four mic rating in The Source and 70% by Sputnik Music.
