PRhyme 2 is the second collaborative album from PRhyme, a duo consisting of rapper Royce Da 5'9" and producer DJ Premier. It was released on their own record label PRhyme Records on March 16, 2018. This project marks 3 years since their first eponymous album was released in 2014 on the same label to positive acclaim by music critics.
News first surfaced about a potential sequel to PRhyme in February 2016 when Royce dawned upon the idea of making another album with DJ Premier in a interview with Vibe:
Royce Da 5’9 says he wants to [go into] the studio with DJ Premier to possibly begin working on the sequel to their 2014 album PRhyme.
After reflecting on the 10-year anniversary of James “J Dilla” Yancy’s seminal album Donuts, the Detroit native revealed that he has several major announcements coming up in the near future. Although he didn’t give away all of the surprises he’s got in store for 2016, he did give PRhyme fans hope for the second installment of his joint album with Preemo.
“I can tell you that me and Preem are going in April to do ‘PRhyme 2,‘” said Royce.
The months after that and leading up into late 2017, there was no official news on PRhyme 2 besides hints. In May 2017, Royce posted a video on Instagram showing him and Premier in the studio with his younger brother Kid Vishis and producer/composer Antman Wonder. In November 2017, Royce stated that “every beat on PRhyme 2 has a guest appearance”.
In late January 2018, the release date for PRhyme 2 was leaked online on the site for Fat Beats Records: March 16, 2018. Similar to the first project with composer Adrian Younge, DJ Premier has exclusively used the samples of Antman Wonder for the project. This bears significance, as DJ Premier and Antman Wonder had both produced Skyzoo and Torae’s song, “The Aura,” from the former’s joint album, Barrel Brothers. The tracklist, cover art and features are going to be announced the first week of February of the same year.
Both Royce and Premier announced that the first single to PRhyme 2, “Era” featuring Dave East, was going to be released on February 1 with a music video accompanied alongside it. Antman, Royce and Premier all released a snippet on both Instagram and Twitter:
The tracklist plus list of songwriters was leaked on the first of February. Some artists that are featured on PRhyme 2 include Rapsody, Yelawolf, CeeLo Green, and Big K.R.I.T..
Eight days before PRhyme 2’s release, on March 8th, fans were given a streamed-peek of the full album on National Public Radio’s First Listen: “First Listen: PRhyme, ‘PRhyme 2’.”
