American IV: The Man Comes Around is an album released in 2002 by legendary country musician Johnny Cash. It is his 87th studio album, the 4th in his series of “American Recordings,” and the last one released during his lifetime.
Most of the songs in this album are covers of other people’s songs done in Cash’s stripped-down style, with assistance from producer Rick Rubin and others such as John Frusciante, Fiona Apple, Nick Cave, and Don Henley. The only original songs featured in this album are The Man Comes Around, Give My Love to Rose, and Tear Stained Letter.
The most famous cover featured in this album is his version of Hurt, originally by Nine Inch Nails. It was so famous, it caused people to mistakenly believe that it was a Cash original.
Filled with the haunting and sad vocals of a man near the edge of death, The Man Comes Around is considered to be a powerful statement and one of his best works.
