Fastlife is Joe Jonas' debut solo album and first effort outside of his band Jonas Brothers.
Following the Jonas Brothers world tour, the indefinite hiatus set the tone for the brothers to go their separate ways. It was marked by Nick Jonas’s project Nick Jonas & the Administration and the announcement of a Joe album in the works in 2010.
Joe mentioned via Vulture that he embarked on making an album that never saw the light of day, leading to one of his biggest career disappointments:
I recorded more than a dozen songs with a guy named Robert Schwartzman […] I handed the songs in, and Hollywood Records was like, ‘This doesn’t work.’ They said the songs were too weird and sounded like demos. The record company wanted me to use a team of Disney hit-makers […] But it felt so fake to me. I called my manager and said, ‘I really want to slam my head into a wall right now.’
He continued describing his experience with the album and that, according to the record label, he was the successor to an established male pop star:
We reached out to some of the biggest producers in the business, Rob Knox and Danja, for the solo album that actually got released, called ‘Fastlife.’ […] But I think there were a lot of cooks in the kitchen, and I think it was rushed, and I couldn’t speak up because I was scared to. They wanted me to be this Justin Timberlake clone. Even one of the heads of Hollywood Records said, ‘He’s the new Justin Timberlake!’
The album sold a total of 18,000 copies in its first week of release, reaching #15 on the Billboard 200 chart and #99 on the UK Albums chart. At Metacritic, it has an average score of 66 based on five reviews.
Joe told Daily Bruin the meaning behind the album’s title was one of the first ideas and that it emerged from one of the tracks:
There’s a song I wrote called ‘Fast Life,’ and it’s about going out, having a good time, and enjoying life to the fullest. That’s how I look at life all the time. You might have speed bumps along the way, but you are just able to continue and have a great time […]
Fastlife was promoted with the singles “See No More” and “Just in Love.” And the promotional single “Love Slayer,” with which he launched a $2,500 remix contest. A promotional video for the track “All This Time” was posted on French radio station NRJ’s official website and on the singer’s YouTube channel.
Joe performed songs from the album on stages like Chicago’s B96 Pepsi SummerBash, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and The Today Show. He co-headlined the Joe Jonas & Jay Sean Tour, alongside contemporaries Jay Sean and JoJo. Joe was the opening act for Britney Spears on ten European dates for her Femme Fatale Tour.
Following his appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and his performance on Conan, further promotion for the album was halted.
