My Mother’s Hymn Book is disc number 4 off the Unearthed box set, released November 2003, right after Cash’s death. The following year, the album was released as a standalone CD. The recordings took place during Cash’s 1993-4 sessions for American, among the first produced by Rick Rubin for the label, but were unavailable until 2003. The songs themselves were not new. Cash had played most of these Christian covers live during one point or another of his career, and about half of them had already been released in Cash’s other religious records: * tracks 6, 9 and 10 in 1962’s Hymns From The Heart; * tracks 5, 11, 14 and 15 in 1975’s Cash Sings Precious Memories; and * track 7 in The Survivors Live.
