A week prior to releasing the tracklist, Royce da 5'9" told Ambrosia For Heads that he was set to release a new studio album entitled Layers. He stated that the album is set to be released on April 15th, 2016. This album is a reintroduction to Royce 5’9" but also an introduction to Ryan Montgomery. This album is actually the first ‘layer’ of many that will be revealed this year. By the end of 2016, I want people to really get a chance to know me. Layers is the sixth solo album by Royce da 5'9", and the first since his 2011 album Success Is Certain, released on April 15, 2016 by Bad Half Entertainment through Spotify, Apple Music, Google Play, and Amazon. Since then, he has been working hard making music with his supergroup Slaughterhouse, and teamed up with producer DJ Premier to generate the rapper/producer hybrid duo known as PRhyme. Royce shared how it felt working alone versus working in a group: There are a lot of pros and cons to working by myself and working in a group capacity. A con is I have to do a lot more writing by myself. When your writing a song with three other people you don’t have to do as much work. I’m inspired by other artists, so that’s a plus, but when I’m working alone it’s 100% what I want to do which could be cool too. The album received much hype leading up to its release date, as some have even perceived to believe that the album is Royce’s best work yet.
