When Mayer Hawthorne and Jake One met in 2005, they exchanged mixtapes (link is provided). This marked the birth of Tuxedo.
When working together they realised that they have a mutual adoration for disco and boogie funk. The record was heavily influenced by Death Row-era music and other artists like Chic, Shalamar and The Whispers.
It took them a decade to finish this album. Just a moment before it was released, disco and funk seemed to make a comeback. Mainstream artists like Bruno Mars or Daft Punk had major success with tracks like “Treasure” and “Get Lucky”.
With respect to that, Jake One said that he does not want people to think that Tuxedo is copying music. He feels that the reincarnation of disco and funk is confirming their passion.
