Mikie King

Mikie King is a North American Rap/Hip-Hop artist. Born and raised in a predominately conservative environment, Mikie often led to his beliefs being challenged by some of the people in the area. Coming out of Rockcastle County, Kentucky, a county that, according to a census in 2010, is 98.48% white, racism in the town is very strong and widely accepted. Because of this, throughout Mikie King’s life, he’s put it upon himself to speak out for those people who feel as if their voice has been taken away from them, such as people from different races, the LGBTQ+ community, those who battle with depression, etc., and has been known to include this in his music. Mikie King, born on September 12th, 2000, has not exactly lived the most ideal life. In his early years, he was raised by his mother, Angela Rountree, and step-father, Bobby Peters. Mikie King’s biological father, Joe King, has never been in the picture, nor has he ever spoken with him due to the continuous irresponsible decisions that would lead him to jail. Mikie, along with his mother, his sister, and his step-brother, moved into a trailer with his step-father in the year 2004, when Mikie was only 4 years old. They all lived peacefully in the house together until 7 years later in 2011 when Mikie’s mother kicked his step-father out for spending the money she made on drugs. Bobby would travel to Florida with a few friends, whilst claiming he was going on a trip from work, and pick up pills from a hospital, which he would sell when he got back to Kentucky. In December of 2011, Bobby was arrested on charges such as manufacturing methamphetamine, tampering with physical evidence, and complicity to murder. He is not eligible for parole until 2028, and is scheduled to be released in 2036. Since then, Mikie’s mother, Angela, had taken care of him and his sister. Due to the new absence of Bobby, Mikie became more angry and defiant throughout his teenage years, thus making it much harder on his mother. He toned it down a lot when he turned 16 and has since focused more on music than anything else. Angela, Mikie’s mother, passed away in a car accident on September 22nd, 2017, only 10 days after his birthday. This took a major tole on him and majorly impacted his music career. He made the song “Traveling On (Angi’s Legacy)” shortly after her passing as tribute to her and continues to include her in his music to this day. Songs such as “I Won’t Let You Down,” and “Weighin' On My Mind” include lyrics which reference and/or mention her. Mikie King, whose alias used to be ReflXion (pronounced as “reflection”) released his first mixtape at the age of 14 in the winter of 2014 entitled “Mirrors: A Reflection Of Self,” or “MAROS” for short. Giving that he was only 14 and just starting out, the quality of the audio wasn’t that well. He recorded the mixtape by sitting an Android phone next to a karaoke machine that he would rap into, which sat next his television that he used to play instrumentals off of Youtube. He would take the recorded audio and send it straight to Soundcloud. MAROS, after release, gained little to no attention at all, which made Mikie feel more discouraged and began contemplating on whether or not he wanted to continue being a musician. But, after long deliberation, he decided to continue creating music after a record producer and rapper from Texas named “Indeanel” found “MAROS” and gave him, free of charge, a laptop, a mixer, a microphone, and a recording software, which he bought online from the Best Buy in Lexington, Kentucky for Mikie. Mikie received this equipment and dropped his second mixtape entitled Silent Audacity. Silent Audacity was written mostly for those who battle depression and anxiety. This mixtape gained slightly more attention, bringing him to his first 100 streams on Soundcloud. Mikie waited little time on working and dropping his third mixtape, entitled “Melophobia: The Mixtape,” which shot his plays way up, bringing his total streams to over 5,000. None of the tracks from “MAROS,” or “Melophobia: The Mixtape” are available anywhere online today, and only one song from “Silent Audacity” is available, which is titled “Life For Rent (Ft. Dido).” After the release of “Melophobia: The Mixtape,” Mikie finally learned how to produce instrumentals and mix his music better. He began working on a 4 track EP, titled as “Migraine EP.” The EP included tracks such as “Last Ride,” “Bully,” “Sinister,” and “E.N.D.” Mikie saw these songs as a milestone in his career because it was the first content he was ever able to make any sort of profit off of, considered he owned all legal rights to the music. Mikie released several mixtapes after the “Migraine EP” was dropped, until he eventually dropped “Heartless EP” and the “Darkness LP,” both of which featured multiple diss tracks to artists such as Lil Change, Murky Waterz, and J-Krazz. None of which replied except for Lil Change, which let to a full on beef between Mikie and Lil Change and his then alliance J8Y and BO$$. While Lil Change was invested in the beef, J8Y and BO$$ felt as if Mikie had won and dropped out of it. Dropping a total of 8 tracks to one another, the beef officially ended. Soon after, J8Y and BO$$ had parted from Lil Change and began beefing with him, asking Mikie to join in. Mikie soon became a mentor of sorts to BO$$ and J8Y, but they eventually stopped communicating. Soon after, Mikie began working on “DARKNESS.” This EP was another milestone in his career because it featured Mikie sporting a new sound: trap. Songs on the EP such as “Parkour,” “Worry ‘Bout,” and “Money Stop” had a more modern sound to them, which garnered the mixtape many plays. “DARKNESS” also featured the song Mikie made in tribute to his mother who passed away. After “DARKNESS” released, Mikie King gained some major inspiration. He then changed his alias from “ReflXion” to “Mikie King” and got to work on his “KING EP.” He dropped the first single, titled “One Shot,” which collectively gained over 39,000 streams. In an attempt to keep that momentum going, he dropped “Weighin’ On My Mind,” which topped at 15,300 streams on Soundcloud. He soon dropped one more single, titled “FAME,” which was produced by a friend from school named Brendan Kirby (BCK BEATS). “FAME” reached 26,100 streams. The “KING EP” later dropped and failed to keep the momentum going. Mikie King has since dropped 3 songs since he released the “KING EP,” but the most notable one out of the 3 was a song titled “Rockcastle Look Alive,” which is a remix of BlocBoy JB and Drake’s song “Look Alive.” Mikie wrote this song speaking about some of the negative aspects in his home of Rockcastle County.
