Yung Bans, Vol. 5, is the fifth installment from his homonime series of mixtapes. In the first few months of 2018, the Atlanta rapper had already released a pair of wildly popular, self-titled mixtapes. Vol. 5 extends the win streak, collecting more of Bans’ low-key singsong voice, which glistens with syrupy bass. Songs like “Stuntin Like My Daddy” and “Ridin” are snapshots of excess and decadence (no coincidence that Vol. 5’s cover photo is an homage to Bowie’s Aladdin Sane). On “Round”, Bans shares a light moment with rising Chicago emo rapper Juice WRLD. Yet despite the focus on lifestyle, he takes time to express regret “Wish I Had” and mourn XXXTENTACION on “So Long My Friend”.
