Acid Rap - Chance the Rapper
Acid Rap

Acid Rap is Chance’s second mixtape and gave him a nation-wide recognition. It was the number one spot of Rolling Stone’s 10 Best Mixtapes of 2013 and it even landed at the No. 63 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart after being sold by unauthorized retailers. In review, Rolling Stone picked out “the density of wit, ideas, and verbal invention”, whilst Pitchfork praised its eclectic influences: It invites elements of classic soul, juke, gospel, blues-rock, drill, acid jazz, house, ragtime scat, and R. Kelly, Twista, and a young Kanye to the same open mic poetry night, where the kid on-stage is declaiming about what’s going unreported. Its genius is that he somehow makes this work. But social commentary is perhaps Acid Rap’s most distinctive feature. Chance is reminded of watching his friend die in every empty hallway, compares Chicago’s gang violence to Hurricane Katrina, and longs for the days when he could peacefully watch cartoons. On June 26, 2019 Chance announced that Acid Rap would be coming to streaming services along with 10 Day, and subsequently dropped both that night in anticipation of his debut album.
