Rebel Heart - Madonna
Rebel Heart

Rebel Heart is the thirteenth studio album released by Madonna. Lyrically, the record depicts the duality of the singer’s romantic and rebellious sides, with songs representing each of them. Sonically, it is a pop album that merges other genres such as house, trap and reggae. To achieve this kind of sound, Madonna worked with a bunch of producers such as Diplo, Kanye West, BloodPop, MIKE DEAN and Avicii. To The New York Times, Madonna talked about the record: There’s a lot of reminiscing on this album, I’ve been doing what I’ve been doing for over three decades, so in many ways I feel like a survivor. I see that many of my peers, and friends, and people I collaborated with are no longer with us. That gave me pause. I said, ‘Wow, I can’t believe I made it this far.’ That was a catalyst for me. There’s a looking back here, a missing the beginning of my career when I was surrounded by other artists — not musical artists, but artist-artists — like Keith Haring and Basquiat and Warhol. It was a time when pop music was more naive and free. I was missing that feeling and that mixture of so many different worlds in New York. With the first single planned to be released on 2015’s Valentines Day, Rebel Heart suffered a massive leak in 2014, which forced Madonna to release the first six tracks and put the album for pre-order by December. However, it didn’t stop the hacking; demos kept leaking until after the album release. Eventually, an Israeli man was arrested for it. Right after the first leaks, Madonna commented on what happened: There are no words to describe how devastated I was. It took me a while to recover, and put such a bad taste in my mouth I wasn’t really interested in making music. I felt raped. With generally positive reviews from music critics, the record peaked at #2 on the Billboard 200, topping the charts in Australia, Canada, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Switzerland. To promote the album, four singles were released: “Living for Love”, “Ghosttown”, “Bitch, I’m Madonna”, and, exclusively in Italy, “Hold Tight”.
