Mama's Gun - Erykah Badu
Mama's Gun

Erykah Badu’s sophomore album was not so much a departure from it’s predecessor, Baduizm (a smooth, soulful 70’s informed record), but more of a refinement. Her ruminations on young black men affected by injustice “Other Side Of The Game” continue on this album “A.D. 2000” As well as her aversion to over materialistic people “Bag Lady” so if you’re looking to escape her infamous “Baduizm’s” you won’t be in luck. New elements are introduced however. The brash album opener “Penitentiary Philosophy” runs into overdrive with wailing wah-wah guitars and a funk that refuses to quit. Ms. Badu also dabbles in new sounds for a short spell, collaborating with the legend himself’s son, Steve Marley, on the reggae infused “In Love With You”.
